On Wednesday, December 12, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa will celebrate its 60th anniversary aiming to concentrate on its role in accelerating economic growth on the continent.

This year’s celebration in Cameroon is said to be marked by a colloquium on the Stakes, Opportunities and Challenges of Economic Diversification in Central Africa, which will be held in the capital city Yaoundé.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has been involved for the past 60 years in bringing global perspectives in Africa as well as taking Africa’s perspectives to the rest of the world. Similarly, UNECA has been providing the platform for African countries to come together and make their economy stronger and flexible, as reported by Journal du Cameroun.

“We have been behind the processes that have led to the recent signing of papers of the African Continental Free Trade Area,” the Communications Officer of UNECA’s sub-regional office for Central Africa Abel Akara Ticha said.

According to Akara Ticha, the UNECA was equally a strong pillar in the creation of the African Development Bank which has proven to be a catalyst for development in the continent.

The Central Africa Consensual Road Transport Master Plan looked forward to connect all the nations’ capital cities on the continent in one of the standard UNECA’s project since its establishment. Already 36 road networks have been completed and Yaoundé (Cameroon’s capital city) has been linked by road with Republic of the Congo’s capital city Brazzaville.
