In a significant move against the illicit trade of counterfeit and spurious drugs, a joint operation was conducted by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), East Zone, and the Drugs Control Directorate of West Bengal. The raid targeted the premises of M/s Care and Cure For You, a wholesale drug supplier in Kolkata, and resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and other pharmaceutical products suspected to be spurious.

The seized drugs were labelled as products of international origin, including Ireland, Turkey, the USA, and Bangladesh. However, the absence of supporting documentation verifying their legitimate importation raised suspicions. By law, such undocumented drugs are classified as spurious, prompting enforcement action. Adding to the concern, investigators also discovered empty packing materials on-site, which suggests potential repackaging of substandard or counterfeit drugs.

The market value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs. 6.60 crore, making it one of the more significant seizures in recent years. Samples of the confiscated drugs have been sent for rigorous quality testing to confirm their authenticity and safety. The remaining quantity has been secured by the CDSCO to prevent any further circulation in the market.

Accused Taken into Custody

During the raid, the alleged proprietor of the wholesale firm, a woman whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested by the Drugs Inspector of CDSCO, East Zone. Following her arrest, the Hon’ble court granted judicial custody for 14 days, allowing authorities additional time to interrogate her regarding the source and distribution network of the drugs.

Wider Implications and Government's Response

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reiterated its commitment to combating the threat posed by counterfeit and substandard medicines. Spurious drugs not only undermine public health but also erode trust in the healthcare system. The seizure highlights the government's zero-tolerance policy towards this illegal trade.

Public Awareness and Continued Vigilance

Authorities are urging consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing medicines. The public is advised to buy drugs only from licensed pharmacies and verify their authenticity, particularly when purchasing high-value or life-saving drugs. Instances of suspected counterfeit drugs should be reported to the nearest drug control office.

The CDSCO and state authorities plan to intensify their surveillance and enforcement activities to dismantle the networks involved in the production and distribution of spurious drugs. This includes collaborating with international agencies to trace the origins of such products and identify cross-border smuggling operations.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
