Mitchell pitches to lead San Diego Padres get past San Francisco Giants

Right-handed starter Bryan Mitchell pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings Monday night to lead the visiting San Diego Padres to a 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Right-handed closer Kirby Yates came on with the bases loaded in the ninth to strike out pinch-hitter Austin Slater for his 11th save of the season.

The 27-year-old Mitchell allowed seven hits and three walks with a season-high seven strikeouts. Mitchell (2-4) finished with career-high totals of 8 1/3 innings and 118 pitches. He had never gone deeper than seven innings and had never thrown 100 pitches in a game.

The Giants loaded the bases in the ninth on a leadoff double by Brandon Crawford and two walks.

No Padres pitcher has thrown a complete-game shutout this season.

Jose Pirela led the Padres offense with three hits, including his fourth homer. Rookie right fielder Franmil Reyes had two hits and two RBIs for the Padres. Wil Myers also had two hits and scored two runs.

The Padres improved to 63-94, meaning they will not lose 100 games for the first time since 1993.

The Padres scored single runs in the second, third and fourth against Giants left-handed starter Derek Holland (7-9) before scoring two runs in the sixth against reliever Ty Blach.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second when rookie catcher Francisco Mejia hit a one-out double and came around on singles by Pirela and Manual Margot. Myers doubled leading off the third and scored on Reyes' opposite-field single to right. Pirela homered leading off the fourth.

Holland gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Blach worked three innings, retiring the last eight hitters he faced.

But the Padres scored twice in the sixth on three straight one-out singles by Freddy Galvis, Myers and Hunter Renfroe (RBI), and a run-scoring groundout by Reyes.
