Sao Paulo went two points clear at the top of Brazil's Serie A on Saturday but they will be angry at not extending their lead further after being held 1-1 at home by a limited America Mineiro side.
Diego Souza put the home side in front when he headed home a cross from Nene seconds before halftime.
America drew level with nine minutes remaining when Matheuzinho pounced in the box to hammer home a loose ball after Sidao could only parry a close-range shot.
Sao Paulo was the better side but they could not make their advantage count.
They now lead the table by two points from Internacional, with the Porto Alegre side facing Corinthians away from home on Sunday. The point cemented America's position in sixth place.
