Tom Brady is working with Josh Gordon to build a rapport
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is working on developing a rapport with new wideout Josh Gordon but indicated Friday that it will take time to assimilate Gordon into the offense.
"He's been here for a few days, so we're working at it every day," Brady told reporters Friday, "and every day you try to make improvements."
Acquired for a conditional fifth-round pick from the Cleveland Browns on Monday after missing Sunday's game with a hamstring issue, Gordon is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game in Detroit. He was limited this week in practice with a hamstring injury, and Brady sounded like he doesn't expect the new wideout to play a major role against the Lions.
"It's up to the coaches to decide those things," Brady said. "You could limit the number of plays and try to do that, and I think we've done that plenty of times. That's any time you get new players, that's what you try to do."
If Gordon is not active for at least 10 games with the Patriots, New England will get a seventh-round pick in return from Cleveland, but that likely won't factor into whether Gordon plays Sunday.
Head coach Bill Belichick has been complimentary of Gordon's approach since arriving in Foxborough.
"I think Josh is a smart kid," Belichick said. "He's worked hard. He's picked up a lot."
Sunday's game is the third of four for which the Patriots are without suspended wide receiver Julian Edelman, who is eligible to return to the team Oct. 1.
