People across the globe today are celebrating World Bicycle Day. The day which is being celebrated for the first time aims at creating more awareness towards the protection of natural environment, thereby saving fuel.

Various events are being held to mark the day. UN laid out a few points so as to inculcate the healthy habit of cycling which not only protects the environment but also is a great form of exercise.

  • The bicycle is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation;
  • The bicycle can serve as a tool for development and as a means not just of transportation but also of access to education, healthcare and sport;
  • The synergy between the bicycle and the user fosters creativity and social engagement and gives the user an immediate awareness of the local environment;
  • The bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transportation and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.

United Nations declared 3rd June as World Bicycle Day to promote the tool as a sustainable development thing not just of transportation but also of access to education, healthcare, and sport.

UN says the relation or coordination between the bicycle and the user creates an environment of creativity and social engagement and gives the user an immediate awareness of the local environment.

The day was announced during the 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly in New York City with a resolution adopted by a consensus of 193 member states last year in December.

The bicycle fosters sustainable development, strengthens education, promotes health, prevents disease, and promotes respect and facilitating social inclusion.
