Alwar launches project to engage women in water management

The Centre for Social Research would train the elected women representatives and women of rural self-help groups to maintain water bodies, water conservation and water harvesting mechanisms.

A new project was launched by an NGO to engage women in water management in Rajasthan's Alwar district, an official statement said Thursday.

The Centre for Social Research would train the elected women representatives and women of rural self-help groups to maintain water bodies, water conservation and water harvesting mechanisms.

"Women should be involved in water management extensively. It is an effective strategy to achieve women empowerment in the country and ensure better development outcomes at the grassroots level," Ranjana Kumari, the director of the Centre for Social Research said in a statement here.

Capacity building training programmes on water conservation and management in Kali Khol and Bakhtpura Gram Panchayats will be carried out under the project which was launched recently.

This will be followed by training sessions for women self-help groups to carry forward the restoration, repair work or installation of a new common water source in villages.

These water sources will be maintained as a common property by the SHG groups with community support. Activities like pond deepening and embankment will be carried out, the NGO's release added.
