Somali women rise for inclusion in post-conflict construction, humanitarian response

The women in dire need of these responses are the ones displaced, living in refugee shelters.

The celebrations of the World Humanitarian day held in Baidoa, Somalia saw Somali women rise up for their inclusion in the drafting of the new constitution so as to protect their human rights and initiate ways to encourage more women into political leadership.  

Women remain to be on the forefront of violence and conflict since time immemorial and still continues to be the least equipped of all beings to protect themselves in situations like these. They, along with their children, remain to be the most affected and vulnerable, thus creating this urgent need to address their problems and provide them with rehabilitation and humanitarian responses along with post-conflict construction of their lives.  

The women in dire need of these responses are the ones displaced, living in refugee shelters.  

The Federal and the Regional Governments are approached earnestly by the Somali women in the gathering and the Federal Miniter of Women and Human Rights Development, Ms. Deqa Yasin promised to work for the same. She commented to make the civil society more inclusive of the women and girls in Somalia.       

The UN Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka appreciated humanitarian actors for their active role in ensuring that the vulnerability and insecurity of women and girls during conflicts and post-conflict situations are kept in check.

She commented on her examination of the situations regarding child marriage, female genital mutilation and human trafficking as horrible acts and demands for their immediate rescue from such situations.    

The demand for women and girls not be taken as targets for gender-based violence during conflicts and billing and enforcement of proper laws for that to be considered by the drafting committee was the main talk in the meeting.    

More than 2.6 million people reside in displaced camps in Somalia out of which majority are women and children. They are in serious need of humanitarian assistance as fending for themselves is near to naught in a country like that.

UN Women Africa is working with the Government of Somalia to protect their human rights and organize developmental programs to educate the women for the same.
