Police Tuesday arrested four members of a gang here for allegedly assaulting an employee of a private finance firm and robbing him of Rs 4.75 lakh.

The employee, who was working with the finance firm in Maduranthakam in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, was on his routine visit to Puducherry to collect money from borrowers Monday.

When the employee was driving along the Ellaipillaichavady road, the four-member gang waylaid him. The gang attacked him with sharp-edged weapons and robbed him of the cash bag containing Rs 4.75 lakh he had collected from the borrowers, police said.

The victim filed a complaint with the nearest police station.

Based on the CCTV footage, police traced the accused and arrested them. Search is on for the fifth accused, they said.

Apart from the stolen cash, three mobile phones and two motor cycles were found in the possession of the accused, police added.
