Lyudmila Rudenko was a Soviet-era chess player born in Lubny, Ukraine on this day in 1904.

Google Doodle celebrates Lyudmila Rudenko’s 114th Birthday. As she won 1928 Women’s Championship in Moscow she started making her career in this game of strong minds. Along with this title, she also won many other prestigious titles in her lifetime.

Lyudmila as an International Master in World Chess Federation and Woman Grandmaster made a career paving the way for women to come. Lyudmila’s father introduced her to chess when she was just ten years old. With swimming as the first love she also competed in a local competition in Odessa, Ukraine in the 400-meter breaststroke.

1950 was the year when Lyudmila became the second woman ever to win World Chess Championship for women title. She held this title until 1953. Despite her best accomplishments in the game, she considered her life’s most important achievement to be organizing the exit of children during the Siege of Leningrad in World War 2.

In 2015, Lyudmila Rudenkos was inducted into World Chess Hall of fame.
