With just 42 sq km of land area, Diu has made to become first and the only Union Territory to be 100 per cent solar efficient. Ujaas Energy Limited and Electricity Department of Daman and Diu has planted over 50 acres with solar power facilities, reducing monthly bill charges of its residents by 12 per cent.

Earlier use of 0-50 units, costs INR 1.20 per unit and 50-100 units charge was INR 1.50 per unit. After this achievement, Union territories and Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission for India has revised it, now 1-100 units charge is INR 1.01 per unit.

Three years ago, Gujarat was providing electricity to the people of Diu which resulted in huge line losses. “The population of Diu is only 56,000. For water and electricity, the Union territory was solely dependent on the Gujarat government. To overcome this limitation, the administration of the Union territory decided to set up solar power plants in Diu,” says Milind Ingle, Daman and Diu electricity department executive engineer Milind to TOI.
