Highlights of day two of the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang (times GMT):

0850 UNITED KOREAN TEAM MAKE UNDERWHELMING BOW IN ROWING

The United Korea team, composed of athletes from both North and South Korea, made their first appearance in this year's Games in the men's lightweight four rowing event but had a poor start as they finished last in their heat.

The team's hopes now lie in the repechage race, which will be held on Tuesday.

0830 INDIAN WRESTLER KUMAR STUNNED IN QUALIFICATION

India's Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist, and three-time Commonwealth gold medal winner, was ousted in the qualification round of the men's freestyle 74 kg event.

The 35-year-old, who is yet to win a gold at the Asian Games, lost 5-3 to Bahrain's Adam Batirov.

Kumar's compatriots Bajrang Punia, Sandeep Tomar both progressed to the quarter-finals of the 67kg and 57kg events respectively.

0630 TAIWAN SHOOTERS WIN FIRST GOLD IN PALEMBANG

The first gold medal in Palembang, which co-hosts the 18th Asian Games with Jakarta, went to Taiwan after Lin Ying-Shin combined with Lu Shao-Chuan to win the 10m air rifle mixed team event with a Games record score of 494.1.

Zhao Ruozhu and Yang Haoran win the silver for China totaling 492.5 while Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar won India's first medal, a bronze, with a score of 429.9.

0530 SUN SATISFIED WITH HIS SWIM IN 200M HEATS

China's Sun Yang eased comfortably through the heats of the 200 meters freestyle on Sunday with the fastest time of one minute 47.58 seconds in the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre pool.

The six-time Olympic medallist, who could win up to five golds in Jakarta, said he was "satisfied" with his swim and that he would be taking the Asian Games very seriously as an important stepping stone on the road to the Tokyo Olympics.

U.S.-based Jordanian Khader Baqlah was second fastest in 1:47.60 with a pair of Japanese, Naito Ehara and Katsuhiro Matsumoto, third and fourth on the time sheets.

World champion Wu Jiayu (53.60 seconds) of China pipped Japan's reigning Asian Games champion Ryosuke Irie (53.85) to top the times in the men's 100 backstroke heats.

Japanese Daiya Seto set the pace in the men's 100 butterflies with a time of 1:57.23, nearly a second clear of compatriot Nao Homura.

Sun's compatriots Liu Yaxin and Peng Xuwei were quickest in the heats for the women's 200 backstroke, while Japan's Satomi Suzuki and Reona Aoki topped the times in the women's 100 butterflies.

The finals will be later on Sunday.

0245 CHINA CLAIMS FIRST GOLD

China claimed the Games' first gold medal when Sun Peiyuan won the men's changquan at the Jakarta International Expo at Kemayoran. Hosts Indonesia opened their account with a silver from Edgar Marvelo, while Chinese Taipei's Tsai Tsemin claimed the bronze.

0100 FIRST DAY OFFICIAL ACTION GETS UNDERWAY

After an explosive opening ceremony that lit up the Jakarta sky on Saturday night, the first official day of action got underway at the 18th Asian Games on Sunday morning.

While preliminary action has already taken place in sports such as soccer, Sunday will see the first medals awarded at the quadrennial multi-sports Games.

The sky over the Indonesian capital was clear with temperatures already climbing above the 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) mark.

The first gold medal will come in Wushu with men's changquan final in progress at the Jakarta International Expo at Kemayoran.

Medals are also up for grabs in swimming, fencing, taekwondo, wrestling and shooting which takes place in the other host city of Palembang.
