The Northeastern University in Boston will be sending twenty of its students to the global fellowship program organized by the Millennium Campus Network and the United Nations Academic Impact Initiative. The fellowship aims at developing leadership skills and finesse in fighting some of the society’s greatest challenges including poverty, education and climate change.
Announced on Wednesday, the 530 2018 Millennium Fellows from 30 campuses across 13 countries will be enrolled in semester-long leadership development program. They will be spearheading projects that will highlight the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the UNAI’s principles amongst the students’ communities and beyond them.
Regular fellow meetings to learn from each other and side by side development of professional skills and leadership like management of teams during conflicts, strategic planning, and grant writing will be a significant feature of the fellowship programme.
Aiming to tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges, the Millennium Campus Network, a global non-profit organization based in Boston launched the fellowship program in the year 2013. They have partnered with the United Nations Academic Impact this year for an expansion of the program to accommodate more students from across the globe and create a uniform idea of Sustainable Development around the world.
The fellows concentrate on different subjects according to their fields of interest. Keyon Rostamnezhad, a student from the Northeastern University is a fellow who is involved in a project on climate change policy and co-founded the University Climate Delegation Coalition.
Miranda Martone, another fellow from the Northeastern is working on a project on the Sexual Violence Prevention Association, Ava Gallo, in her fellowship period is expanding an initiative called EcoScholars on climate change and Patrick Hernandez is in the interest to develop the Peer Health Exchange in under-resourced schools and there are many more.
The excellency of the Northeastern University shows in their hosting of the Millennium Campus Conferences in the years 2012 and 2013 which is a great chance for an organization to be in constant touch with the global sustainable development scene.
A remarkable achievement for the university was last year when one of the students, Jodi Robertson received the Millennium Oceans Prize for her campaign called Raising Fins helping the divers to protect themselves in the hostile marine environments.
