Four workers of a popular restaurant here have been arrested for allegedly serving liquor without licence and using forged documents, the local excise department said on Sunday.

The arrests were made after a raid at Burash in Sector 132 on Saturday night. A cache of illicit liquor was also seized from the restaurant, District Excise Officer Subodh Kumar Shrivastava said.

In a statement, the department said it has been carrying out inspections to curb the sale and transportation of illicit liquor in view of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in accordance with instructions of the Uttar Pradesh government.

''As part of the ongoing enforcement campaign, on Saturday, the Excise Department team, after receiving information about serving of liquor without licence at Burash restaurant in Sector 132 Rohillapur, four accused namely Alok Jha (manager), Dharamveer Kumar, Thanglenhau Chongloi and Sonu were arrested from the spot,'' it stated.

''When the license was sought, the accused fraudulently presented the date and registration number of the old licence by forging it. On checking, the licence issued on that registration number was not found valid. The name of the licensee on that license was Ankit Pranav Jain (restaurant operator), who was not found at the spot,'' the department said.

The excise officials further said that they have seized over 50 beer bottles, two bottles of red and white wine from the restaurant.
