President Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Shri upon Sathyanarayana Beleri in the field of agriculture during the Civil Investiture Ceremony on Thursday. Beleri received the prestigious award in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in the national capital.
Sathyanarayana Beleri, a farmer from Kasaragod, Kerala, is known for conserving 650 varieties of traditional rice varieties. Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines and fields of activities like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. 'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, 'Padma Bhushan' for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field.
